When Maharaja Ranjit Singh took control of Kashmir in 1819 it had a profound impact on the design of the region’s shawls, with exuberant patterns replacing the comparatively static images produced during its struggles against the Mughals and Afghans. With examples from museums and private collections, this well-illustrated volume explores the development of these motifs as an artistic movement, inspired by North Indian miniature paintings, Kashmiri manuscripts and Sikh Holy Scriptures.
